GEROPHARM took part in Russia–Africa Forum

GEROPHARM experts Petr Rodionov, General Director, Irina Emchenko, Head of International Development Department and Roman Drai, Director of R&D Centre, gave a speech at Russia–Africa Forum, which was held on July 27–28 in Saint Petersburg.

The speakers presented cases on working with African countries, outlined the problems that Russian pharmaceutical manufacturers face when entering the market, and proposed solutions that will expand cooperation in the nearest future.

One of the key tasks for GEROPHARM when entering African markets is to increase the availability of insulin for patients. Today, there are about 44 million people on the continent who have been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus.At the same time, as world statistics show, about 50 % more are undiagnosed cases. Given the spread of the disease, the number of patients may more than double by 2045 up to 100 million.

This March, GEROPHARM transferred the technology for recombinant human insulin production to Algeria in record time: within 2 months. 3 batches of insulin manufactured from the Russian substance have been sent to Algerian hospitals. The company is also implementing a project in Morocco, where marketing authorisation for insulin glargine has already been obtained.

Experts noted that Russian manufacturers face the most barriers during medicinal product registration due to differences in regulatory requirements. To overcome them, it is important to develop a dialogue between the Ministries of Health of Russia and partner countries, including the need to create a single platform for the mutual exchange of experience, the consolidation of efforts in achieving mutual trust in the regulations of the two countries, the elaboration of common approaches to medicinal product development and production, as well as the requirements imposed in Russia and in Africa to generics and biosimilars. Such interaction will create conditions for the development of export projects.
