Diabetes mellitus is the most common of all endocrine pathologies in children. Many parents do not even realize that children also can suffer from diabetes. Physicians often mistake diabetes symptoms for URTI or poisoning. A survey of parents of children with diabetes mellitus conducted in 2019 by the Russian Government Expert Council for Social Care showed that in 42 % of all cases, the disease was diagnosed when a life-threatening event developed. It is a great hazard to health. At the same time, type 1 diabetes symptoms are quite telling: urinary frequency, especially in the nighttime, excessive thirst, and weight loss in spite of increased appetite. Therefore, it can be diagnosed early if family members know of its manifestations.
In 2019, GEROPHARM with the support of the Russian Government Expert Council for Social Care, the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, and the Being Together Charitable Foundation organized a large-scale information campaign for raising public awareness of the type 1 diabetes mellitus symptoms in children. The campaign was titled Children Also Suffer from Diabetes. Its purpose was to improve the early diagnosing of diabetes and to bring down the number of cases when it is diagnosed with life-threatening events developed, including coma.
